we did. We had to protect thee … and the others,” Aurwyn replied in a quiet voice.
“Yes of course, the Gwirebs of the forest, to name those you are already aware of, to whom I will take you to visit one day.”
Nomis caught the feeling from his father that this was not exactly what he had meant about ‘others’. Moreover, before it could be formed into a question, Pelydryn was continuing smoothly, “Aurwyn and Enfys were deliberately not told of your whereabouts by the Gwirebs for fear of either of them revealing it, in case they should be captured and tortured by the Pruddenaid. They did torture you … did they not, Aurwyn, … after your capture? Did they ask you to reveal all you knew of others possessing powers of Gallael?” Pelydryn asked gently.
“So they did … most brutally and cruelly! But worse, they hadst forced my dearest Enfys to witness my long and painful torment, which ended with my brutalised and dismembered body being too shattered to remain any longer in thy world. One day both she and I shalt be avenged for that foul act!” Aurwyn spat through clenched teeth, with a vehemence that seemed out of place in this euphoric garden. Nomis was startled, but he too, shared those feelings.
“In what way may I help you, Father? What is it that I must do to avenge you both?” Nomis, caught up in his father’s thirst for revenge, asked eagerly.
“My son, thou art not yet ready, but learn all thou mayest from Pelydryn. He possesseth wisdom and knowledge that he hath amassed throughout the ages, which wilt give thee strength. Learn from him as I once hath done, and thou may yet restore the crown of Golau to the rightful king, and succeed where thy mother and I didst fail,” he finished earnestly but with an undertone of bitterness.
“Aurwyn, do not blame yourself! You knew when you began that all the pieces of the Prophecy were not in place, and that your brave Castellan Knights were more eager to fight and harass the enemy, rather than search for the stones and crown. You and I were the only Efengyls in the field at the time.”
