With that, the strange figure walked down to the edge of the moat and continued gliding right across the surface of the water! Nomis was amazed. He had thought things like this were impossible. No one could actually walk on water! Nomis was petrified with fear and although he felt like running back inside the tower, something (probably this stranger) was ‘holding’ him stationary.
“Do not be afraid Nomis. I will not hurt you,” the stranger said as a kindly voice inside his head.
Even as the stranger moved closer, there was still no sign of how he was moving. His feet were hidden beneath his shimmering silvery purple cloak and glowing blue-mauve robe. Nevertheless, as he moved nearer many of the tall newcomer’s features became more distinct. He had a long white beard, nearly to his waist, and bushy eyebrows that seemed to protrude from under his hood. His matching long white hair framed a lean face full of humour and strength. He was quite obviously very old, but the lines of his face were not careworn in any way. His eyes were a deep violet-blue and had a very special quality about them. They were piercingly bright and showed great power. Nevertheless, they were filled with enormous wisdom and compassion that seemed to span the ages.
“We meet at last, young Elfin!” the figure said silently as he stood before Nomis.
Nomis felt very intimidated and wondered if he should speak or just ‘think’ a suitable reply to the stranger.
“It is all right, Nomis. We will converse in the conventional manner as you find telepathy a little disconcerting at present. That may change as we progress, but I am forgetting my manners! Let me introduce myself, … I am known by many names but in your language my ancient name translates to Pelydryn. You may call me that if you wish. It is perhaps a little less formal, since we shall become quite close in the near future. You never know but you may even count me as one of your friends in time.
