Nomis felt suddenly excited as a thought occurred to him. He fumbled with his pouch and tipped out the little bluestone, and much to his delight, it was again glowing brightly with a blue-violet light, all of its own!
“What on earth…?” Hiral muttered.
“I was given this as a token by the Voice, as you call him, … Pelydryn … who is supposed to be coming for me,” Nomis replied enthusiastically. “Master Pelydryn also warned me directly, that I must be on my guard because there was danger about. …” Nomis was reluctant to say any more, lest he have to explain his strange growing powers of Gallael.
“When did you receive it and why did you not tell me sooner?” Hiral had slipped back into his normal brisk manner.
“Well, sir … it all happened last night while I was watching the moon. I believed it was just a dream because when I looked at the stone this morning, all the light, I thought I’d seen last night, had vanished. I felt convinced that I’d imagined the whole thing, so I thought it not worth saying anything.”
“Yes, well, I suppose I’d have done the same thing in your place,” Hiral replied grudgingly.
“It seems obvious now that your ‘Dream’ and my ‘Voice’ are indeed related. We must therefore begin to make quiet preparations for your departure from my service. I will ensure that you are well versed in all I know of travelling herb-medicine, and anything else that may help you with your new master. I will not have anyone saying in the future that I didn’t teach you properly.
