Nomis suddenly became tired of having to keep explaining who he was to everyone he had met today. He fervently wished for the tranquillity of his chamber back in the Great Tower, where he would no longer be such an oddity! This edginess must have shown in his voice.
“I’m an apprentice herblore physician from the Great Tower, studying under Master Hiral,” he recited mechanically.
“I’m sorry to be so inquisitive but I do feel I know you and I’m only trying to find out where we have met before,” retorted Drimana sharply. There was a strained silence between them.
She immediately regretted being so abrupt with this rather handsome Elfin, and decided to change her manner towards him. She smiled. “I can see that unless you’ve ever been to my tower before, there is no way that we can have met, for I have not visited any of the other towers. Have you ever visited the Kitchen Tower, Nomis?” She used his name as they exchanged glances; the effect was very surprising. It seemed to unlock something in his brain, almost as though someone had turned a key in his mind. To cover his uncomfortable yet extremely pleasant feelings, he turned away and they began walking together as he replied.
“If you were there, then I’m sorry that I haven’t ventured to your tower, Drimana. We haven’t actually met before, because I feel quite sure that I would have known your name and something about you. It’s funny, but you are not the first person I have encountered today with whom I’ve shared these feelings of having met before … His name was Gludog …”
Drimana was touched by his softer tone. “You’re right. Something strange is happening; I can sense it all around but I don’t understand any of it.”
“I’ve been experiencing quite a few unusual things recently, too,” Nomis replied scratching his ear at his own understatement, “but soon I hope to have some answers,” Nomis finished a little wistfully, remembering Pelydryn’s assurances about being his new tutor.
