“However, please don’t mention this to your tower physician, for within our calling it is considered bad manners to treat another’s patient. It may therefore have serious repercussions at your tower’s higher levels, should it be made known that an apprentice of another towers’ physician treated a patient here.”
Nomis wondered at his tone of authority, which came from his utmost certainty due to the mental pictures he often had nowadays. These seemed to be increasing as he progressed in his studies. They were still a marvel to him for how could he have visualised this chef’s mother in her bed, examined her and made a diagnosis, all in his mind? He suspected that it was yet another example of his growing powers of Gallael!
His attention was brought back to the present with his complaining stomach. Everyone laughed, and the patty-chef disappeared and returned quickly with a full platter of hot, large flatty-cakes! When they had finished, the chef returned with a small wicker box containing more cakes to present to Nomis’ master with his thanks. Anything was better than subjecting his mother to the leeches!
“Farewell young Masters. I’ll send word if I may, on my mother’s progress. But I have no doubts that everything’ll be all right now,” the round-faced patty-chef said.
“It hath become my hope soon to visit a friend in the Great Tower. Thus I should be honoured to take thy message to Master Nomis, personally,” Lawnslod volunteered. “’Tis the very least Master Patty-Chef, after serving such a repast!”
Once they took leave of the buttery, they made their way upwards, to the courtyard entrance. The sentry on duty challenged them.
“Good day to thee, Gwylan. I hath received orders to escort this young physician from the tower safely. He hath assisted the tower physician with the treatment of an incurable patient.” Lawnslod spoke to the sentry with no hint of uncertainty and with a tone that did not require a reply. He winked at his three dumbfounded charges, conspiratorially, whilst the guard made an entry into his ledger about Nomis.
