“Er … Well … I suppose technically it was last night in the tower Refectory, but so much seems to have been happening that I haven’t had time for a proper meal since then. I’ve managed to have some honey bara this morning; but my stomach’s complaining that my throat’s been cut!” Nomis finished with a cheeky grin, fervently hoping he had estimated Lawnslod correctly, and would not come in for a clip-round-the-ear for his impudence!
“What about thou others? Hast thou both taken midday repast?” Lawnslod still looked stern, and Nomis wondered if he had had it wrong after all.
“I ate this morning with Robyn, in the Refectory,” Gludog confidently replied, “and then I received orders to go out on a foraging errand for some special bark for the distillery. I missed midday meal, but I’m not sure about Robyn!” He finished wickedly. Robyn looked scared. He did not want to antagonise this senior tower guard, in addition to all the others that he had already had a beating from earlier!
Lawnslod smiled saving him the trouble of replying. “It is of no matter, thou imp; we were all appraised of thy little escapade this midday repast! Yet methinks thou didst not have time to join with the others at table?”
Robyn hung his head and murmured: “No, I didn’t, Sir Lawnslod.”
“No matter, we shall make best haste to the Guard buttery to see what fare they have to spare for three hungry bellies!”
The three youngsters grinned at each other with relief at their unforeseen good fortune. They made their way expectantly along more passages and steadily climbed upwards, until their legs ached. Nomis felt relieved when Lawnslod announced: “Not much further. Thou mayest smell the hot flatty-cakes cooking on the griddle.”
As Nomis went up a few more steps in Lawnslod’s wake, he too could smell the delicious aroma wafting down the corridor. His stomach churned again, which made Lawnslod chuckle. Nomis felt very glad that Clogfryn had been such a good friend to this stoical guard, and he resolved to seek him out on his return that very night, to express his thanks.
